Four new public artworks have been chosen to form the focal points of Brighton’s forthcoming all-night festival. The special commissions will be revealed at Brighton & Hove White Night on October 30 . Judges were looking for unique art installations which would convey the theme of Illumination and respond to the call to 'do something different in the middle of the night' .
White Night marks the end of British Summer Time and aims to present the arts as a reclaim of the streets and an alternative to drinking culture in the city centre. This will be the third year of the unique festival that last year attracted 25,000 people to the city centre.
All four works will be seen in Brighton. One will also be displayed in Amiens in France as part of their Nuit Blanche: Brighton’s sister city for the celebrations. That takes place on October 16.
The Anglo-French commission is Antigravity by Brighton artist Steve Geliot working with the legendary JD Beavallet. Steve created the unforgettable Compton Skyline project back in 2006 Although details are being kept under wraps, be prepared for a hi-tech combination of light and music involving some of the city’s young people and a mysterious shape in the sky.
An all Brighton consortium of contemporary urban art organizations will create an interactive installation in Jubilee Square. Wet Paint Productions, Art Republic and Ink_d are illuminating street art in paint and pixels with an unexpected twist.
Elsewhere Claire Potter design is creating an at-sea art work inspired by the starlings and drawing attention to the birds’ threatened roosting site. Mini Murmuration will be a shimmering cloud of red lights generated by wind near the West Pier throughout the night.
In a third commission, a group called Luminance will create and install an Epiphany Dome in the North Laine. A lavishly-lit geodesic dome will host interviews with passers-by about personal epiphanies. These will be projected during the night as the evening progresses.
Cabinet councilor for culture David Smith said: “These show what an amazing fund of creative ideas this city is. I’m really looking forward to seeing the imaginings of our artists coming to life on the night.”
Around 30,000 people are expected at the city’s third White Night event, organized by the city council and Brighton & Hove Arts Commission and supported by Arts Council England & the European Union Interreg 4 (Channel) programme.
It will feature dozens of venues open late or all night plus many events, art trails and installations and promises to be even bigger and better than last year.
We'll all meet up somewhere beforehand.
